west side spirit's new york gal columnist, lorraine duffy merkl, was named humor writer of the month by the erma bombeck writers' workshop newsletter. the bimonthly newsletter chose upper east sider merkl for her funny yet true-to-life columns, "much in the spirit of erma bombeck's style," wrote matthew dewald, director of the workshop, in an email.
