And speaking of a rise in New York City homicides, a 26-year-old man has the dubious honor of being the first murder victim of 2007. Jonathan Ridley of Brooklyn was walking down Sutter Avenue with his girlfriend in the early afternoon on Monday when he was shot in the back. Police say that the bullet went through his heart and Ridley died on the scene. The moral? The more you drink on New Year’s, the later you sleep in, the less of a chance you have of being killed.
