Year of the Rat Attack

I’m not a big holiday person, but I didn’t hold back last night at my family’s Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner.  With all 19 of us together (extended family) I ate my share of chicken (for longevity), vermicelli noodles (for longevity), fish, duck, pork, oysters, lotus root, sea conch, bean curd and, finally, sweet tapioca soup for dessert.

But even if you don't have Chinese heritage, you can get in on the action. I miss the smell of gunpowder, and there's still a little time to catch the firecrackers in Chinatown.  It’s meant to ward of evil spirits.  Since Giuliani was mayor, playing firecrackers without permits was banned because of the high incidents of fires and accidents, but the cultural performances last until 3pm today.

Go to Chatham Square (Intersection of Bowery, Mott & East Broadway) to take part in the action.  A dozen lion, dragon and unicorn dances troupes will march through Chinatown Streets.  Keep an eye out for the unicorn.  It’s extra skinny and daintier than the lions, and dances in spirally, psychedelic motions—sure to make you laugh and feel dizzy.

But if you miss any of today's festivities, there will be another [Chinese New Year parade] in Chinatown this Sunday, February 10, from 1-5pm with floats and marching bands. And supposedly, [Flushing has a bigger New Year’s Parade](http://queens.about.com/cs/neighborhoods/p/2004_chinesenew.htm) on Saturday, February 9.
