This past weekend the [New York Press Association] had their Better Newspaper Contest. We sent in some submissions. We won some awards. Congratulations to all our contributors, and check out the stories that won accolades.

First Place Feature Story, Division 4 [ Juli Steadman Charkes, "Juli's Choice"] "In an incredibly competitive category chock full of high quality entries, this wonderfully written story, which brought me to tears, is a worthy winner. Good voice and tone throughout; opinions are clear and well-stated."

Third Place Feature Story, Division 4 [ Joe Pompeo, "The Remains of Fresh Kills"] "This writer has a nice touch. Tactful, detailed writing."

Second Place Coverage of Health, Health Care & Science This is for several pieces, but [here's one to take a look at]. "Extraordinary, in-depth stories that are extremely pertinent to local interest. Great reporting and well-written. Good focus on topics that would have fallen under the radar..."

Best Front Page, Division 4 [ The Roommate From Hell...] "Front page grabs the reader and pulls you in.  Design forces you to read the whole page to make sure you don’t miss anything."

Second Place Editorial Cartoon, Division 4 [Justin Bilicki] see more of his [work on his site](http://www.bilicki.us/). "Well drawn, humorous without being a particular slam to the party — maintains focus on candidate and the issues."

Third Place Graphic Illustration, Division 4 Doug MacDonald, ["Congestion Question"] "Cover illustration is the perfect image to convey the story (It’s a good story, by the way — one I wouldn’t have read just based on the headline. It’s the art that sucked me in...)"
