Funny that the fields were to be reserved mostly for a select few private schools, while now being made of artificial turf. When we played soccer there it was real grass. When the parents learn more about how this substance is being banned in other areas, they are likely to be very upset with the Parks Dept, elected officials and Randalls Island Sports Federation staff...I smell more lawsuits on the way...

Great article. One thing, if the Council Members wanted to stop this, they would stop allocating tens of millions of dollars to a pseudo-public agency, the RISF, the Director gets two salaries and is engineering all of the discriminatory policies. Easy to speak to the media and say she doesn't like this, but then she could stop the money from flowing to them. Ask her about that. She hasn't. In addition, our youth group in Harlem can't even go there, because the Bridge is closed. The most Jim Crow situation ever, very distressing.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer's comments are laughable. He
supported making the deal that gave exclusive field access to 20 of
Manhattan's wealthiest private schools who could afford paying for this
privilege. He refused to protect the "rare, precious resource for the
public." He was and continues to be an obstacle in making sure "that the
fields on Randall’s Island are able to be enjoyed by all students,
regardless of what school they attend.”

He did not to support community input. He voted yes on this project. He
is not fooling anyone. His statements to your paper are nothing short of
a lie. We don't need his "compromises."
