Tigers Maul Moose, Yankees

New York starter Mike “Moose” Mussina might want to go into hibernation a little early this year after getting walloped for the third consecutive start last night; but even if he doesn’t want to, the Yankees might not give him a choice.

Mussina (pictured) gave up six earned runs and nine hits in just three innings, and the Detroit Tigers [mauled the reeling Yankees 16-0] at Comerica Park. Just six days after getting [bludgeoned by the Anaheim Angels](http://www.nypress.com/blogx/display_blog.cfm?bid=11501489), Moose allowed at least six earned runs for his third consecutive start—the first time that has occurred in his storied 16-year career. He now has an absurd 17.69 ERA over his three starts and the Pinstripers, who sit two games behind Seattle in the Wild Card race with just 31 games remaining, now must decide if they should give Mussina another chance or call up much-heralded prospect Ian Kennedy to take Moose’s spot in the rotation.

Reliever Sean Henn also had a rough night for the Yankees, getting tagged for nine runs—seven earned—in just two and two-thirds innings. Meanwhile, Detroit phenom Justin Verlander shut down the New York lineup, allowing just three hits and striking out six in seven innings. The Bombers don’t have any time to lick their wounds, however, as the first-place, archrival Boston Red Sox come to town tonight and would like nothing more than to add to the carnage.
