TEXTILE RECYCLING DRIVE

| 02 Mar 2015 | 04:37

grownyc and wearable collections, two environmental groups, are organizing a joint textile drive at the west 77th street and columbus avenue greenmarket sunday, april 11.

the organizations are trying to keep textiles out of the city's waste stream. wearable collections points to a recent study that found the city annually wastes 386 million pounds of textiles.

"this event is one way that grownyc provides opportunities for the public to recycle beyond new york city's curbside program," david hurd, director of grownyc's office of recycling outreach and education, said in a statement. "the added benefit is helping to divert from disposal the 193,000 tons of textile waste that new york city residents generate as refuse each year."

though there are drop-off locations at several greenmarkets throughout the city, this textile drive is a one-day event. the organizations will be collecting from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at a table in the west 77th street/columbus avenue greenmarket. for more information, contact grownyc at 212-788-7900, or wearable collections at 646-515-4387.
