Students and Residents Rally Against Transfer Station

Locals voiced their objections at the planned site of a garbage transfer station on the Upper East Side

On Saturday, November 2nd, more than 200 people attended a Student Stand-In with student-athletes from the Asphalt Green Community Sports League and Students Who Pledge 2 Protect on the field of Asphalt Green to protest the construction of the East 91st Street Marine Transfer Station (MTS).

Participants wanted to bring attention to what they say are the potential dangers faced by the young athletes and their supporters, who will be most affected by the MTS when it is constructed. Up to 500 garbage trucks, 6 days a week, 24 hours a day, will cut through Asphalt Green, and roll up the entrance ramp to the planned MTS just 11 feet from a toddler playground and sidewalk/doorway into the water sports building.

"Garbage Stations DO NOT belong in residential neighborhoods, especially next to where children play," said Pledge 2 Protect President, Kelly Nimmo-Guenther.
