The indie-rocking, sushi-eating NYC government gang have yet again blamed Big Tobacco for more people’s premature deaths, this time attributing the fire at the former Deutsche Bank building, which claimed two NYC firefighters’ lives early this month, to [“careless smoking.”] Next thing you know, these tree-hugging, vegan-loving Ralph Nader fans are going to tell us that carcinogens are bad for us too, and that they kill people as well.

In a press conference yesterday afternoon, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said a preliminary investigation, involving more than 50 interviews, led officials to conclude that smoking by construction workers sparked the fire. He also said, however, that the NYC Fire Department did not have a plan in place to fight fires in the building and that a standpipe system that was supposed to deliver water to firefighters was broken and disconnected. As a result, firefighters could not get water above the fifth floor for quite awhile, which contributed to the disaster and possibly cost the firefighters their lives.

Subsequently, the fire commissioner announced that the Fire Department had [relieved three officers of their commands] who were responsible for overseeing the safety of the building and devising plans to fight any potential fires involving it.
