Rudy’s Southern Blunder

Clearly, Rudy Giuliani must not do his own grocery shopping. But you’d think for the purposes of at least seeming like a man of the people, he’d research the [cost of a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread]. Unfortunately for him, while campaigning in Alabama yesterday, he decided to go with the average price circa 1980. “A gallon of milk is probably about a $1.50, a loaf of bread about a $1.25, $1.30,” he said. Um, does he not remember [the great milk scare](http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-bzmilk0331,0,2863795.story) earlier this year when it was announced that prices would rise by nine percent? And even nine percent does not account for this discrepancy: It seems [D'Agostino](http://www.dagnyc.com/) supermarket charges $4.19 for a gallon of milk and $2.99 to $3.39 for a loaf of white bread. Even in Montgomery, Ala., a gallon of milk is about $3.39 and bread is about $2. Well there Rudy, we think you just lost the milk-lover’s vote.

Perhaps in an attempt to recover from such a faux pas, Giuliani then went on to say that individual states should have the option to [fly the Confederate flag] over their capitol. The New York Daily News reports, “The display of the Confederate flag has been seen by some as a source of pride and by others as a loathsome symbol of the South's history of slavery. It has become a contentious issue in many Southern states.” But Giuliani believes in freedom and will fight for each state’s right not to be bound, or we dare say enslaved, by rules of civility and respect.
