Report: ATF Investigating Bloomberg

| 11 Nov 2014 | 01:22

According to a [letter posted on the website] of the Second Amendment Foundation, Mayor Mike Bloomberg's blind purchases of firearms as part of an investigation into illegal gun dealers last year is under investigation by the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).

The letter indicates that the ATF is actively investigating whether or not Bloomberg's sting operation was legal, but offers no further details. Read more about Bloomberg's battle against illegal guns [here] and [here](http://www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org/html/home/home.shtml).

“We’re delighted that ATF is taking this matter seriously,” said SAF founder Alan M. Gottlieb in a [release]. “Mayor Bloomberg dispatched private investigators to several states, where they apparently made straw gun purchases in an effort to file civil lawsuits against gun dealers. The mayor refused to turn over alleged evidence obtained during this vigilante operation to ATF or other proper authorities, and instead exploited the affair to advance his own political agenda.

UPDATE #1: A spokesman from the ATF has just confirmed to me that the letter is legitimate. Also, he noted that an investigation does not imply that anything criminal took place, but that the ATF is simply reviewing all of the information available. The Department of Justice will make the final determination as to whether or not any findings will or will not be prosecuted. I've also placed a call for comment to Bloomberg's office on the matter.

    UPDATE #2: [More here.]
