Police are investigating a string of seemingly random Bronx attacks that they believe were [perpetrated by the same group] of four to 10 men who left one victim dead and five other hospitalized. Police Commissioner [Ray Kelly](http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=1&aid=71140) said of the incidents, “What makes it unusual is that there was no robbery involved and no obvious motive in this case.”

The first attack took place on June 1 when two men were attacked as they left the Cool Cuisine West Indian restaurant at about 2:30 a.m. One of them, John Mateo, 54, died on Sunday from resultant injuries, the other victim survived. Last Friday night, two others were accosted in separate incidents within a few minutes and one block of each other. Then on Saturday, two more men were beaten in the same area, according to police. Each attack occurred on [Kingsbridge Road] between Jerome and Morris Aves.

Witnesses say the assailants are all black and Hispanic men in their early 20s, which doesn’t really narrow it down. Nevertheless, if you have any information concerning the assaults, call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
