The US Department of Education announced its annual list of top academic schools across the nation. The Upper West Side’s PS 199 was the only Manhattan School to make the list of 236 public schools and 50 private schools, and one of only six New York City schools named.
The schools are awarded for either extremely high academic excellence, or significant improvements made. The school was most likely in the latter category, because just six years ago, PS 199 was added to the “Needs Improvement” list under “No Child Left Behind” because of poor testing results. But this year, 78 percent of its students passed math state testing and 74% passed the English state testing exams.
The Department requested nominations from every state. PS 199 has a lot to brag about, especially after the school’s close call with the DOE plan to tear down a public school- at first PS 199 was on the chopping block. The school has been lauded for having involved parents and tolerance toward children with disabilities, according to Inside Schools.
