Pennington Leads Jets To Victory

The first two weeks of this season could not have gone worse for Chad Pennington. In Week 1, [Jets fans cheered] as Pennington hobbled off the field with an ankle sprain, an embarrassing moment for both New Yorkers and Pennington. In Week 2, he had to stand on the sidelines while the Jets [fell to 0-2](http://www.nypress.com/blogx/display_blog.cfm?bid=47143639) and beloved backup Kellen Clemens got the start. Yesterday, however, Pennington got his redemption.

The hobbled quarterback threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, as Pennington led New York [past the Miami Dolphins], 31-28. The game wasn’t nearly as close as the score would indicate. When Pennington galloped into the end zone from two yards out with 12:51 remaining in the fourth quarter, New York possessed a commanding 31-13 lead. “He's the ultimate competitor,” tight end Chris Baker said.

Thomas Jones had his first big game as a Jet, rushing for 110 yards on 25 carries, and backup tailback Leon Washington contributed with an electrifying 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The win improved New York’s record to 1-2, which amazingly is [good enough for second place] in the AFC East division. They're still two games behind the New England Patriots though, and short of divine intervention, there’s no conceivable way that New York will catch the Pats. Still, getting that first "W" was important.
