Party Animals Trash Times Square

Times Square threw a wild party this past New Year’s and, like any party (well, any party serving booze), there was a huge mess to clean up. Miraculously, by two p.m. New Year’s Day, the streets were restored to their typical post-Giuliani state of cleanliness. Now, [the Departm][ent of Sanitation has revealed exactly how much trash] we New Yorkers (and let’s not forget the tourists) produced while ringing in a bigger and better year: the grand total is 42 tons! Tons, as in what you weigh an elephant in. That’s five more tons than last year but nowhere near as many as 2000, which brought 50 tons of debris. Last year’s cleanup cost $27,648; this year’s has not yet be tallied.
