The method is unusual and the results are striking, and both are coming direct from Tunisia to the Art Students League this month. The venerable art school will host two Tunisian painters and an American artist schooled in a technique called collaborative painting, offering workshops to the public for those who want to experience a completely democratic and cooperative artistic process. —
David Black, the American artist spearheading the workshops, first came to Tunisia in 2008, when the United States ambassador to the country selected some of his paintings to decorate the embassy and subsequently invited him for a visit. Black had spent much of his life as a Broadway producer before losing all his money and happening on his second, quite successful, career as a painter. He stumbled across the Tunisian collaborative method when he took some workshops there and was at first hesitant to jump right in.
