At around 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3, a 15-year-old boy was shopping at a kiosk on Spring Street when a 16-year-old boy approached him, asked, “You know what this is?” and grabbed the victim’s camera from the victim’s hands. The victim refused to let go of his camera and struggled to hold onto it when the would-be thief stated, “My man’s got the grip.” As he said this, a second 16-year-old male accomplice reached for his waistband and simulated a firearm, causing the victim to fear serious physical injury. The first young man then took the camera, and both of the men fled in an unknown direction. Police conducted a canvass of the area but were unable to locate the thieves or the camera, which was a Nikon D 3100 digital camera valued at $500.

The manager of the establishment said there were no working cameras in the restaurant. The victim told police that her bank had notified her that one of her cards had been used to charge up to $1,500 at a discount department store. The stolen wallet contained a debit card, credit cards, her Connecticut state driver’s license, and her student ID.

At nine in the evening of April 26, a 27-year-old man from Howell, NJ met with his friends at a downtown nightclub to celebrate his birthday. They stayed at the club until closing time, when patrons were asked to leave the premises. The man exited the club with his friends and then did not recall any further details until he regained consciousness at a downtown hospital with a crushed-in right-side skull fracture and his right eyeball hanging out of its socket. One of the victim’s friends confirmed that he had transported the victim to the hospital by taxi at 4:50 a.m. The doctor at the hospital concluded that the injury was sustained most likely by the heel of an unknown perpetrator kicking in the victim’s head. The victim requires reconstructive surgery and may face the possible loss of eyesight in his right eye. The victim’s friend stated that there were 500 to 600 people outside the club on Varick and Prince Streets when they left the nightclub, causing the birthday partiers to get separated. When the victim’s friend met up with the victim again, he saw blood covering his face and asked what had happened. The victim replied, “I just want to go home.” $1,000 of the victim’s cash had been stolen. The victim’s friend stated that the birthday party participants were heavily intoxicated but had not been causing trouble. No arrests have been made.

On Friday, May 10, workers finished installing the spire atop One World Trade Center, making it officially the tallest building in the United States at a symbolic 1,776 feet. The spire itself is 408 feet tall. The Associated Press reported that the spire, when finished and active, will serve as a broadcast antenna and keep aircraft away with powerful red LED lights that can be seen from miles away. The tower now stands taller than the Twin Towers that collapsed as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
