NYC’s Own Crop Of Southern Belles

Not that [The New York Times] needs more publicity, but Eric Konigsberg has an interesting article in today’s issue about debs, that’s debutantes for those who weren’t born 80-plus years ago or who don’t come from old money. The daughters of those who do, have coming out parties to celebrate their eligibility—originally, this meant it was time to snag a hubby, now I shudder to think for what these girls are eligible. This year, the International Debutante Ball will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria here in NY ($12,000 to purchase seating at a table). And, of course, there’ll be a Bush in attendance. But what’s really fascinating is how Konigsberg writes this rather traditional article in such an untraditional way. The best part is where he describes these debs like cows with good teeth and shiny hides. Konigsberg discusses their education, at schools like Wesleyan and Trinity College, just like the New York Times wedding page used to over 50 years ago. Then he spends words upon words describing the pseudo-wedding dresses (about $6,000) and myriad accessories for the big day. All in all, it’s rare to find a writer who manages to be so insulting without actually hurling any insults. Well played, old chap.
