New Yorkers, Power Off

Remember that new [$300 million power substation] in the Bronx that Con Ed unveiled earlier this month? Well, it seems it’s just not big enough. According to Crain’s New York Business Reports, eight New York neighborhoods are at a [higher risk for blackouts](http://www.nypost.com/seven/06252007/news/regionalnews/blackout_risk__on_rise__report_regionalnews_samuel_goldsmith.htm) this summer than Queens was last summer. Despite the additional 900 megawatts of force provided to the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens, areas from Fordham (in The Bronx) to Sheepshead Bay (in Brooklyn) may well lose power at some point during the next couple of months.

But that just doesn’t make sense! Why, less than three weeks ago, Con Ed’s website revealed that “crews have been digging, pulling cable and inspecting and upgrading equipment as part of the company’s $1.4 billion investment to meet this year’s forecasted electrical peak demand of 13,575 megawatts. ” And the company announced, “[power supplies are sufficient] to meet the expected peak demand, and that New York City has more than enough power supply to meet the 80 percent in-city generation requirement.” Crain’s, your move.
