New York Fringe Festival: The VaJayJay Monologues

| 11 Nov 2014 | 02:05

An hour-long monologue about how our image of the vagina has changed since Eve Ensler’s acclaimed play, The Vagina Monologues.  Well?!  What did you expect?  Written and performed by Lindsay Burns (pictured), The VaJayJay Monologues starts where Ensler stopped—with pop culture.  The problem is, Burns didn’t maintain enough focus on the cooch and today’s media.  She floated between Britney Spears, Anna Nicole Smith, John McCain, Oprah, Lilith Fair, Hurricane Katrina, the Dog Whisperer and other figures in we all know and love or hate.  While some of her sketches were funny and insightful, like how we should save the word “cunt” for appropriate purposes such as labeling Ann Coulter, unfortunately it didn't even out the preachy and drawn out feeling the play invoked.  But Burns did have a point, the word "vajayjay" does have a nice ring to it and makes you want to shout it out--which, she did.

Additional show times are Aug. 15 at 11:45 pm, Aug .16 at 10 pm, Aug. 18 at 5 pm.  The SoHo Playhouse, 15 Vandam St. (btwn. 6th Avenue and Varick Street).  $15.
