New NYPD Recruit Breakdown

Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly today swore in a new batch of recruits for the NYPD, 1,148 in all.

"With this class, we have continued to recruit highly qualified men and women dedicated to public service," said Kelly.

The mayor's office has provided a breakdown of this new class by race and gender, and not surprisingly white men top the list, as they always have. The new class is 80% male and 50% white. Hispanics make up 29%, 14% is black, 6% is Asian and just 1% represents the nondescript "other" category.
