MOMS FOR CAR-FREE PARK

A group of mothers rallied against the cars that traverse Central Park at excessive speeds, enter the park during car-free periods and engage in other behaviors that are unfriendly toward pedestrians. On Oct. 7, the stroller-clad group, called Mobilized Mothers, along with Borough President Scott Stringer and Council Member Gale Brewer, marched from Central Park West and West 72nd Street to a rally at the Promenade band shell. Mobilized Moms, who come from Harlem, the Upper West Side and Upper East Side, want the Central Park loop drive permanently closed to automobile traffic. Drivers, however, often oppose these car-free park plans because the rerouted vehicles allegedly back up traffic and affect the surrounding neighborhoods.
