Mets Lose; Lead Shrinks

New York Mets pitcher Tom Glavine basically summed up the way everyone associated with the Blue and Orange felt after last night’s [4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies]. “This series certainly hasn’t started the way we wanted it,” he said. No shit, Tommy. The Mets entered this week’s series with the second-place Phillies in possession of a six-game lead in the NL East and with the opportunity to close out Philadelphia for good. But after losing two straight games to the Phightin’ Phils, their [lead now sits at just four](http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/standings).

Last night’s game changed on a measly 45-foot swinging bunt, when Phillies centerfielder Aaron Rowand hit a little tapper down the third-base line that hugged the chalk before coming to rest in fair territory. The unlucky roll allowed Shane Victorino to score from third and knot the game at 2-2, and then Ryan Howard (pictured) launched a 400-foot clout in the bottom of the tenth to win the game for Philadelphia.

Glavine pitched brilliantly for the Mets, scattering eight singles in seven scoreless innings. But after throwing 102 pitches, he couldn’t come out for the eighth. Reliever Pedro Feliciano allowed a Jimmy Rollins home run in the eighth and then the fateful nubber by Rowand, and Guillermo Mota allowed the game-losing homer to Howard. Carlos Delgado provided the offense for New York, crushing a two-run home run in the second.
