London Souls at Luna Lounge

Though none of the members of [The London Souls] were in London for extensive periods, they call themselves that because they're all influenced by "the greats"—Jimmy Hendrix, Cream and the Beatles—who all first made their mark in the English capital. Drummer and vocalist Chris St. Hillaire explained that those musicians became famous in England for imitating American-style rock music. The American-imitating English in turn influenced Americans who wanted to sound more English, so being and calling themselves the London Souls continues this cyclic musical legacy.

I recently saw the band at Pianos and enjoyed their electrifying rock vibe. Kiyoshi Matsuyama (bass and vocals) reminded me a little of Sean Lennon because they're both biracial and have the sweet boy voice. But Kiyoshi says he doesn't know Sean Lennon's music, although he readily identifies with John. Tash Neal has that classic soul voice, and soloed almost throughout the entire program save a few songs (but probably could have used a rest). Tonight's your next chance to hear them live: The London Souls play the [Luna Lounge] at 11:30 (doors open at 7).
