Little Mermaid Drowning

The Little Mermaid stage adaptation is scheduled to open in New York in December, but early reviews suggest the stargazing sea heroine won’t be able to swim in the high-expectations waters of Broadway.

The production, based on Disney’s beloved 1989 animation film which in turn was based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1836 fairy tale, has gotten [hammered by critics] who saw the show during its current [pre-Broadway tryouts](http://www.playbill.com/news/article/109817.html) in Denver. Critics have harangued the director Francesca Zambello for complicating a relatively straight-forward story and for using spacey, futuristic-looking set pieces. Apparently, having a sun and a moon that looks like some oddly-shaped, metallic UFO isn’t flying well with viewers.

Even in this production, Ariel still sings the much-heralded songs like “Kiss the Girl,” “Under the Sea” and “Part of Your World.” It’s just that when she tells audiences that she wants to be part of our world, they might tell just her they don’t want her here.
