Legal Non-Citizens Can't Rock The Vote

Yesterday, immigrant-rights activists lobbied to give legal non-citizens in New York City [the right to vote]. Last year, Democratic Councilman Charles Barron of Brooklyn sponsored a bill that would grant permanent residents and other legal immigrants the right to vote in municipal elections, but the City Council has yet to move on it. Today, Councilman Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn), the sponsor of the Voting Rights Restoration Act, asserted that back in the day, when the majority of immigrants were European, they had voting rights, implying that it’s not the immigrants but the ethnicity of immigrants that has led citizenship voting laws to change.
