For visitors to the West Side Senior Center, there is such a thing as a . The center has provided hot lunches for more than 20 years, only asking for a suggested donation of $1.25.
“It’s one of the very few kosher lunch programs around,” said the center’s director, Phyllis Roth.
Despite the low price, seniors dine on fresh salmon, honey mustard chicken, stuffed cabbage and manicotti. Still, Roth said that many people might not be aware that the center exists inside the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged () building.
After dining, many seniors stay for the center’s activities and classes, including ballroom, tap and folk dancing, exercise classes and movie nights. “This is place for them to engage in activities,” Roth said. “It also provides a place for them to not eat alone, not to be isolated.”
The free kosher lunch program is at JASA, 120 W. 76th St., between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues. For more information, call 212-712-0170.
