HORSES NOT MEANT FOR STREETS

To the Editor: When any creature is used to enrich anyone's pocketbooks, the subject seems to bring out untruths ("Fairytale Ride or Cruel Practice?," Sept. 18). Anyone who feels that these horses are having fun just doesn't give a darn about their safety or their lives. The reporter makes it sound like a ride in the park, while these horses must try and survive in the streets of busy New York City. It is hard enough for cars to drive in these areas-what makes people think it is safe for a horse? Horses were never meant to be on any street. It is inhumane. We have seen the stress it causes these horses their entire lives. What it gets down to is that these people, as long as money is involved, will continue with this torture. It is not safe or humane, and it is time to stop it. Elizabeth Ferrari Soddy Daisy, Tenn. Letters have been edited for clarity, style and brevity.
