High School Coach Goes Batty

A Manhattan high-school baseball coach is facing felony assault charges for allegedly [beating two students with a metal bat]. Apparently, they were cheering for the opposing team. [Ernest Cruz, 34](http://www.wnbc.com/news/13210773/detail.html?rss=ny&psp=news), a volunteer with the Norman Thomas HS boys varsity team and NOT a Department of Education employee (comforting, isn’t it?), was freed without bail at his arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court yesterday.

According to witnesses, Cruz came out swinging two days earlier after his squad beat Fort Hamilton HS 10-5 in an exhibition game. Two Fort Hamilton student spectators were hospitalized, after Cruz allegedly hit them in the face and torso before running away. We’re sure the [City Council] is feeling pretty damn smug right about now, as they stroke their [wooden bats](http://www.nypress.com/blogx/display_blog.cfm?bid=24446077&day=13&startmonth=3&startyear=2007).
