Giuliani's Base Problems Not As Big As You Think

A major knock on Rudy Giuliani's candidacy has been his standing with social conservatives and the religious right, with many surmising that the more religious Republican would never support a thrice-married, pro-choice candidate over more socially conservative options.

A new Gallup Poll finds Giuliani's standing amongst the most religious Republicans is lower than elsewhere, though he still leads all candidates even within that group. The less likely a Republican goes to church, the more likely it is they support Giuliani. As the poll states:

"All in all, Giuliani is still the top candidate among religious Republicans, but leads John McCain by only seven percentage points among this group. Giuliani's lead among less religious Republicans is much larger -- 28 points among those who attend church nearly every week or monthly, and 27 points among those who seldom or never attend church.
