Girls outnumber boys in local gifted programs

    are girls or boys smarter? if this new york times article is correct, the age old debate might finally be answered once and for all.

    according to statistics that the times has compiled 56% of the students in new york gifted elementary programs are girls, while 51% of students in the public school system overall are boys.

    there are several hypothesizes for the imbalance including that the specialized tests determining entry into the gifted schools, may play to the advantage of girls, who tend to be more verbal and socially mature then the boys.

    "girls at that age tend to study more, and the boys kind of play more," said linda gratta, a parent at the anderson school on the upper west side, one of the most selective schools for the gifted.
