Giant Injuries

Many analysts and fans predicted the New York Giants would have a rough season in 2007-2008. Nobody, however, thought the first week would be this rough.

The Giants [lost three key starters] in Sunday night’s [45-35 defeat to Dallas](http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=270909006), all of whom were reevaluated yesterday. Quarterback Eli Manning [sprained the AC joint](http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/11/sports/football/11giants.html?em&ex=1189656000&en=f7a24c18eb0445de&ei=5087%0A) in his throwing shoulder, and his consecutive starts streak of 42 games is in serious jeopardy. His shoulder is better than it first appeared, but his status for Sunday against the Green Bay Packers depends on how much motion he regains in that area. Unfortunately for the Giants, the other injuries are much worse.

Running back Brandon Jacobs sprained the MCL in his right knee, and could miss 3-5 weeks. Osi Umenyiora, the Giants’ sack leader the past three seasons, has what the Giants are calling irritation to the lateral meniscus in his left knee and could miss up to one month.

Things could be worse, however. Backup quarterback Jared Lorenzen (pictured) weighs approximately 752 pounds—more than the entire Green Bay defensive line combined—so the chances he gets hurt are slim; a word that would never be used to describe Mr. Lorenzen.
