Five (Offbeat) Things to Do At the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum

The space shuttle Enterprise will be on display on the IntrepidMuseum's flight deck beginning July 19. The Enterprise is not the only thing visitors can see at the museum this summer: "Top-Secret" Submarine Tour According to the Intrepid Museum website: "The former USS Growler first opened at the Intrepid Museum in 1989 and is the only American diesel-powered strategic missile submarine open to the public." Another plus this summer is the submarine's air-conditioning. Simulators Experience the thrill of flying a supersonic jet plane, the 4D motion ride theater or the Transporter flight simulator. According to online reviews of the simulators, they are only slightly less exciting than a roller-coaster ride. "Humanity Behind the Hardware" This guided tour focuses on those who served on the Intrepid and shows visitors part of the ship typically off-limits to museum visitors. The tour looks at community onboard the ship compared with modern community formation, according to the museum site. Sleep Overnight Onboard Intrepid While this could be fun for ship-lovers of all ages, Intrepid sleepovers are aimed at families and youth groups. Participants explore the shuttle pavilion, partake in scavenger hunts and ride the Theater Cosmic Coaster. Intrepid Women No women actually served aboard the Intrepid, but they are not left out of the museum experience.
