Fiery Furnaces Preview Widow City At Soundfix
The Fiery Furnaces new album, Widow City, hits stores on Tuesday. Widow City, like all of their past work, is challenging and will continue the love them or hate them divide among indie music fans. With this new record, the brother and sister duo of Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger may have their most pop album since the critically praised Blueberry Boat, but dont let that fool youthe Friedbergers still mix up their compositions for more dynamic arrangements than the ordinary verse-chorus-verse structure of modern pop.
Local Brooklynites got to witness the Fiery Furnaces play a bunch of their new songs in the very intimate setting of Soundfix Records on Saturday night. The duo was accompanied by their touring bassist and drummer for a special half hour performance at the small space. The place was packed and the heat seemed to be eating away at the band, especially Matthew who occasionally needed to wipe the sweat off of his keyboards. Despite the heat, the group pleased the crowd with a strong performance, displaying the strength of their new material as well as playing fan favorite Evergreen. After finishing Restorative Beer the band seemed ready to pack up, but fans asked for one more, prompting Eleanor to respond with Are you sure? Its really hot. The band then played Right By Conquest, with Eleanor singing the entire song from within the crowd. Following the performance, fans were offered the opportunity to purchase the new record 4 days prior to its official release.
