Dead Dog Walking

When Gizmo, a little 5-year-old Havanese pooch, went out for a morning stroll yesterday, neither he nor his owner knew he was a [dead dog walking]. Sadly, that was to be the last walk Gizmo and his owner, Maria Palomo, took on 5th Avenue in the Park Slope section of  Brooklyn—or anywhere else. Nearby, an enormous pit bull sat in the back of an open-doored van, eyeing poor Gizmo. It was over in a flash.

Meanwhile, across the Hudson River, coyotes are getting  an even worse rap. A toy fox terrier was attacked in Middletown on Tuesday, and his owners insist it was [a coyote that done it](www.wnbc.com/news/13405361/detail.html ). But Fish and Wildlife officials say otherwise, that paw prints found at the scene look more like those of a fellow dog. Police suggest dog owners tie a bandana around their pet’s neck to distinguish  them from their wild canine cousin.

But New Yorkers and Garden State residents should feel lucky compared to those living in a small community in the Negev desert in Southern Israel. A wild [leopard recently jumped through a window] and into the bed of a man  who was sleeping with his pet cat and his daughter (who had been afraid of a mosquito in her own room). Wearing just his underpants and a tee shirt, the 49-year-old man wrestled with the worthy foe for 20 minutes before park rangers could come to take the animal and release him back into the wild. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt. But we can’t say the same for the late Gizmo.
