On March 6th, police observed a man making multiple purchases of cigarettes from various drug stores and pharmacies using gift cards. At a pharmacy on East 86th Street, he was observed trying to use multiple gift cards to purchase cigarettes at approximately 10:30 a.m. He was stopped by the officers, and promptly showed him the gift card – the numbers did not match the numbers on his receipt. The suspect was found in possession of 25 gift cards — all of which had been encrypted with the credit card information that he had skimmed off of previous shoppers. The 38-year-old black man was arrested for grand larceny.
