Country Lovin' Gender Gap
A new Quinnipiac Poll finds that women more than men tend to have a more positive image of countries that don't get along with our country.
The poll, called the Global Thermometer, which measures how friendly voters feel countries are towards the United States, on a scale of 0 - 100, found that men had a more positive view than women of twelve of the 18 nations and governmental organizations tested by the poll. Five of the six that get a more positive rating from women than men are nations with which the United States has strained relations - Venezuela, the Palestinian Government, Syria, Cuba and North Korea.
"The gender gap has been part of American politics for decades, but this split is interesting because women are disproportionately Democratic, and in this survey Democrats are more positive than Republicans about these countries overall," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "While men have a more positive view of 12 of these 18 countries, Democrats have a more positive view than Republicans of 11 of them."
Overall, Americans see England, Canada and Israel most favorably and Iran, North Korea and Cuba least favorably. In addition, women give all 18 countries tested a mean rating of 42.9 compared to men's rating of 45.5 for them.
