Matilda has been the most enjoyable musical I've been to on the West End. Outstanding lyrics by Tim Minchin, a well considered narrative (obviously they can't fit EVERYTHING exactly like in the book, but they did well to chop and change while keeping the essence intact, and certainly kept enough 'dark' parts). The musical didn't pussyfoot around the nasty underlying theme of child abuse/neglect... Matilda's parents and Trunch truly cross the line of 'PC' in terms of how they spoke to and treated the children.

As for the set being 'busy' and distracting; my goodness, I found it beautiful, and the fresh choreography saw the actors interacting with it harmoniously...! I almost feel like I've watched a different show to the one you've described. I do agree with one point however - that sometimes the lyrics were hard to make out. Not sure if that's a problem with enunciation, sound setup, or my hearing, but for the majority of lyrics that I heard I found myself chortling and grinning ear to ear.

I dont agree with you at all. As a west end fan, Matilda is one of the best musicals I have ever seen. The music is amazing and the children's performance is great. It is a show that he whole family will enjoy. I don't think that Matilda has anything to do with The book of Mormon. Matilda is a show for families, although I must say I really enjoyed it is as adult. It is far better than any Disney Musical.
