Cheesy Time: Stinky Brooklyn's Cheese Contest This Weekend

| 11 Nov 2014 | 02:01

OK, OK, I know: you love cheese. But do you love it enough to eat almost half-a-pound in a cheese-eating contest? Oliver Butler does (or did), and he won the contest last year at [Stinky Bklyn]’s cheese eating competition.  Will he be the champion this year as well?  Find out Sunday, June 22 at Stink-Fest '08 in Brooklyn.

The cheese featured will be [Cantalet], a hard French cheese that resembles a mild cheddar.  This year the contestants will have two minutes to eat, twice as much time as last year.  Maybe Butler will get through a whole pound this time and remain, “The Cheese Master!”  And yes, I made that last part up.

Stinky Bklyn manager Chris Remy said they expect a large turnout and the competitors have increased from 20 to over 25.  As far as how that much cheese effects the participants, Remy said last year, “I didn’t see anybody get physically sick…but some looked a little ill.”

The cheese-eating contest is part of The Smith Street Fun Day Fair, which starts at 11 am with Morgan Taylor’s Artscetera entertainment hour.  Save for the 3 pm cheese-feast, bands will play between noon and five including: Dirty Sock Funtime Band, Franglais, The Woes, The Jones Street Boys, and an open jam session at the end.  Fried cheese curds will be sold street style or people can go to Chestnut Restaurant for a special festival menu.

Stinky Bklyn is located 261 Smith St. (btwn. Dougless and Degraw Streets), 718-522-7425; Festival stage will be in front of Smith & Vine right next door.
