Chanting Fast-Food Workers Protest Downtown

City fast-food workers are participating in a nationwide protest over low wages.

About 150 workers and supporters rallied Thursday outside a Wendy's in downtown Manhattan. They chanted "We can't survive on $7.25."

Workers are demanding $15 an hour. That's more than double the federal minimum wage of $7.25.

The restaurant was open but there were no customers inside.

Earlier, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn joined about 300 to 400 protesters on a midtown march. She led chanting protesters into a McDonald's near the Empire State Building.

The Democratic mayoral candidate said the fast-food industry must recognize workers' right to unionize.

The protests were among many walkouts planned in New York and other cities. A series of strikes began last November in New York, then spread to other cities.
