Ch-Ch-Changes: Washington Sq. Park Goes Under The Knife
State appeals court has ruled in favor of [Washington Square Parks $16 million makeover]. The unanimous decision reversed [Justice Emily Jane Goodman](http://wcbstv.com/local/local_story_067202134.html)s July 2006 injunction (in your face you person with common sense!). Goodman blocked the redesign, saying the city had failed to fully disclose its plans and [needed additional approval](http://www.nysun.com/article/50178) from Community Board 2, the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Art Commission. Amongst other things, renovations plans include restoration and relocation of the fountain so that it lies in the center of 9.75-acre park, aligned with the arch at the foot of Fifth Avenue. The Parks Department will not be going through with a plan to install a fence and gate around the park.
Four Greenwich Village residents had [filed a petition to block the redesign], calling it unnecessary. Ya think? And while were at it, you might want to add frivolous. Most of the opposition centers on changes to be made to the circular, sunken fountain basin and the steps that surround it and serve as seating. Some speculate that the makeover uses aesthetic changes to mask an opportunity to change how the park functions lets-get-rid-of-the-homeless-and-the-loiterers type of thing. Of course, arent parks for loitering? The use of the park will be significantly hindered for two years during its facelift, so get your shady lingering on now, 34 degrees or not.
