TV Gays Make Strong Case for Dignity of Same-Sex Marriage

Written by Adam Rathe on . Posted in Entertainment, Posts

Models Paul Anderson and Shaun McCarron, both of the reality show Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, will be getting hitched this November in Bora Bora according to a representative for the show. The photo below was featured on the happy couple’s wedding announcement, getting fans excited for a possible wedding episode. However,  it’s Anderson (at left) and his, uh, Dickinson that seems to be the most wound up. Fingers crossed the pair sends out a Christmas card as well.

Loud and Offensive: Julie Goldman’s Monthly Comedy Show Goes Musical

Written by Linnea Covington on . Posted in Entertainment, Posts

Used as an adjective, the word offensive has two main meanings as defined by Webster’s dictionary: “causing displeasure or resentment” and “to attack.”  In the case of Julie Goldman’s Offensive Women show, both are appropriate. Spokeswoman Erin Keating said the idea behind the show revolves around creating an, “absolutely open place for women to be fearless and funny.”  The best way they thought of to expose stereotypes and judgment of the fairer sex is through a no-holds-barred musical comedy show...

Peach Tartes Get Freaky

Written by Linnea Covington on . Posted in Entertainment, Posts

Summertime means many things to people, but for me, the hot and humid nights call for a romp to Coney Island.  Every Friday night among the glittering games, towering Wonder Wheel and loud-booming music pouring from the Polar Express, fireworks are set off about 9:30 on the beach.  They are so close you can smell the burning explosives mingling with French fries and Nathan’s hot dogs, which by the way you now let you know just how many calories you are pumping into you sweaty beach bound body.

One of the best parts about going to Coney Island is stopping by Sideshows by the Seashore, a classic “freak show” and cabaret venue.  Take a break at their freak show bar on your way to the Cyclone and sample a Coney Island craft lager by Shmaltz.  Choose your favorite freak from the “Sword Swallower” steel hop lager to “Albino Python” white lager, all images modeled after real, live freaks. And, if you happen to be there on a Thursday or Friday night, indulge in the wonderful world of burlesque and Sideshows weekly Burlesque on the Beach

This past Friday I was treated to The Peach Tartes, a storytelling burlesque troupe, and their special guest, The World Famous *BOB* and her “big top.” And yes, that top is big...

Workdays With Maury: Stand-up Joe Mande dishes on his intern days with ‘The Maury Show’

Written by Nate Sloan on . Posted in Entertainment, Posts

The Maury Show, like all television taped before a live, studio audience, would not exist without the thankless wheel greasing provided by its bright-eyed and delusional unpaid interns. Internships in television rarely lead to staff positions or a meaningful future, but you generally don’t come to that realization until you’ve been floundering out of college for a few years in an unrelated field. Therefore, it’s especially satisfying when former interns make proper use of their experiences by taking their stories public.

Pithy stand-up Joe Mande, co-host of the popular Rififi show “Totally JK” and the winner of the Emerging Comic Award at this year’s ECNYs, bites the hand that didn’t feed (or pay) him with a new outing at the UCB Theater called Workdays With Maury, a meditation on the time and energy he gave to help make The Maury Show the gassy shit-parade it is today. I talked to Joe about working for MoPo and learned that when life hands you unexpected results, you’ve gotta learn to make due. Sorry Maury, you are the father of this baby. And he seems a little colicky...

Daddy Ben Karlin Ain’t Ashamed When His Son Farts (and Other Stuff About Raising a Kid in Brooklyn)

Written by Jerry Portwood on . Posted in Entertainment, Posts

Ben Karlin gets a lot of flack for his attitude and creative practices, but the man who was responsible for a lot of the funny on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report also has a softer side. Not much has been said about Karlin the daddy, so until we read this interview in New

Would You Like ‘Okoge’ With That? ‘Revealed’ is the Thinking Man’s Nudie Show

Written by Anna King on . Posted in Entertainment, Posts

Last week, a female performer named Creamy Stevens, all glittery skin and vampy makeup, could be found on St. Marks Place, taking a well-earned cigarette break. “Whoah, what’s going on?” said one guy as he passed, mouth agape. Worth considerably more than the paltry $20 admission fee it demands, the neo-burlesque show "Revealed" offers up a substantial helping of coquetry, comedy and camp, along with other, pinker, softer words beginning with the letter C. Yup, these stripping lasses show the full Monty.

"Revealed" is the brainchild of one Doc Wasabassco (aka Bill Morton), and burlesque performer GiGi La Femme, who looks like a healthy version of Amy Winehouse. Although she displayed the same penchant for self-harm as the burnt-out chanteuse, she did so with a wink and a shiny black paddle, rather than a crack pipe...

Knitting Factory Really Moving to Brooklyn?

Written by Cate Smithson on . Posted in Entertainment, Posts

The speculation continues as to whether the Knitting Factory, time-honored and supercheap New York music club, is pulling up its stakes in search of greener pastures—or Brooklyn (but whatever). According to a recent post on brooklynvegan, a sign on the door of the now-defunct music club Luna Lounge in Williamsburg indicates that the spot could
