Cab Curtailment

Even if you’re white, you might have trouble getting a cab today. At 5 a.m. this morning, New York City taxi drivers [began a two-day strike] over objections to new technology being installed in their vehicles. Members of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance planned the strike in reaction to the Taxi and Limousine Commission’s plan to place GPS tracking systems and credit card machines in their 13,000 cabs. Although there is a noticeable reduction in the number of cabs at major hubs around the city, the exact number of strikers is not known.

At Kennedy International Airport at 7 a.m. this morning, wait time for a cab had already reached 30 minutes. Mayor Michael Bloomberg [announced a contingency plan] yesterday to raise fares and encourage group rides, but time will tell how effective it will be.
