Magical Map of Manhattan

Danny Gold -

Some enterprising New Yorker has finally mapped out the legal parking places all over this fine city. Parallel spaces is "a Map for us, the New Yorkers whose several hundred thousand cars are on the street right this minute." The project started as a labor of love and has turned into quite the feat. And while I'd love to explain it to you, it's 3 p.m. Friday afternoon and this thing looks a bunch of Egyptian hieroglyphics right now. It's confusing, and I really don't feel like going through the tutorial, so that's all you.

Good Google Gone Bad; Beware Bicyclists

Jordan Galloway -

Call it wishful thinking, but we'd like to believe Google Maps considers bicyclists as big a pain as we do. That it too is tempted to shove those two-wheeling terrors right off their banana seats ever time it sees them riding on the sidewalk not in a bike lane where they belong. How else would you explain why its new bicycling directions are potentially putting cyclists' lives in peril?

Snow Stops Fresh Direct Deliveries

Jordan Galloway -
Not wanting to interfere with the disappointment many will feel during a lonely Valentine’s Day, Fresh Direct decided to let its customers down early Business Insider reports. The city-wide online grocery store announced it has stopped taking orders for Wednesday because of the predicted snowstorm.

Security Gates Too Ugly For Council Members

Jordan Galloway -
Garage-door chic will no longer be the after-hours look for storefronts in the city according to the City Council. Monday the council voted to phase out roll-down metal security gates on businesses in lieu of more graffiti-resistant, aesthetically-pleasing alternatives.

Gotham Girls Roller Derby: 2009 Championship, Bronx Gridlock vs. Manhattan Mayhem

Linnea Covington -

As I watched the Bronx Gridlock skate their way to victory, I had mixed emotions. I was happy, because they won in a neck-to-neck game against the Manhattan Mayhem, but sad as well since their victory symbolized the end of the 2009 derby season. This was my first year watching the Gotham Girls and, honestly, they are a pretty amazing bunch of women. To witness the players and teams grow in these eight games has truly been a wonderful adventure. Now, to try and summarize the incredible game last Saturday.

Mane Tamed!

Mike Spence -

The Library's lion is getting a haircut! The Times is reporting that the New York Public Library is unveiling a new logo which is designed to look better online when shrunk—the old one was too detailed and wouldn’t translate digitally. Also Patience, the lion who is featured in the logo, just really wanted to try something new, you know? It was time! Too bad the king of the jungle ended up with an 80s blowout.

Bloomberg Sours on Flavored Tobacco

Rebecca Huval -

Take a long drag of your Warm Mocha Mint Cigar - it might be the last you buy in the city. Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed the ban on flavored tobacco into law yesterday. But before you hyperventilate, read the fine print: the ban doesn’t include clove or menthol cigarettes or even flavored hookah.

Bout Action: Post-Season Double-Header, Brooklyn Bombshells Vs. Sockit Wenches; Queens of Pain Vs. Sockit Wenches

Linnea Covington -

As the roller derby season winds down, interest in the sport has just sparked. The crowd at Saturday’s double-header game was chock full of newbies, tweens, and kids. You could just see images of Ellen Page in their young, innocent eyes. While the games weren’t nearly as violent as the ones in “Whip It,” the visiting team, Sockit Wenches, gave our gals a run for the money and went home with the prize.
