BEACON PAINT UP FOR AWARD

beacon paint and hardware store was named a finalist for a nationwide contest that honors small businesses. the winner of the shine a light award, sponsored by nbc universal, will receive a $50,000 grant and access to american express' marketing team, with an additional $50,000 for advertising.

the three finalists now await popular votes from the internet and from a panel of independent judges.

"it's heartwarming to have people come in and say they voted for us," said beacon paint and hardware owner bruce stark. "so many people out there are supporting us."

beacon has won other business awards for its dedication to community service, such as the new york city small business of the year in 2008.

"anyone can make money, and anyone can sell paint," stark said. "we take pride in what we do and take pride in the neighborhood."
