Bash Compactor: The Teaches of Peaches

Imagine my surprise when I heard that the irreverent “Fuck the Pain Away” singer and performer Peaches was on tour doing a one-woman rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar called Peaches Christ Superstar. I had to see this show.

Listening to the blond Mohawk-sporting singer warble on the stage in her gold lamé pantsuit, I was amused. And despite my lack of religious devotion, she was able to put a lump into my throat with her ability to switch personae from Judas to Jesus to Mary Magdalene. The famous line, “He’s a man, he’s just a man/ And I’ve had so many men before in very many ways/ He’s just one more,” provoked some titters in therapt audience, but it was combined with pleasure in the whole spectacle. Peaches is a bad-ass bitch, but there she was doing this old chestnut and carrying it off. That in itself was hilarious. At intermission, I went to get a drink and in front of me was Michael Stipe of REM, with his photographer boyfriend Thomas Dozol. “Michael, can I take your picture?” I asked. He was reluctant, but when I complimented him as looking especially handsome, the rock star consented.

In seemingly no time at all, we were off to Don Hill’s to attend the official after-party where Peaches was DJing and performing with the punk band Transgendered Jesus, as well as actual tranny performer Danni Daniels. This wasn’t just about a band playing, it was a show—and a crazy one at that. Daniels leapt onto the stage wearing a silver sequined jumpsuit covering her whole body and face, and proceeded to seductively zip herself out of it. Her penis, inches away from my face, was painted black to match her tattoos and the black painted nipples of her 36-DDs. Prancing around like a reindeer, she was soon joined by Peaches, who landed like a spaceship and immediately started wailing and brandishing the mic like a weapon. The stage became a riotous setting for debauchery and loud discordant music. As Jesus said in his show, “God forgive them/ They don’t know what they’re doing.”
