With the Cat Butts magnetic mini kit ($6.95, www.runningpress.com), you’ll never mistake one breed of feline for another again. The extremely detailed illustrations on these handy die-cut magnets make it easy to distinguish the subtle differences between various cat asses. As a bonus for those of you unsure how to identify that which spews forth from the other end of your pussy, there’s also a hairball magnet. The Educational North American Cat Butts Field Guide completes your education. At 32 pages, it’s chock full of everything you ever wanted to know about the rear ends of five specific cat breeds—Persian, American Shorthair, Siamese, Siberian and Black and White—and useful advice like, “It is not recommended to touch a Siamese on the anus directly.”

I Didn’t Inhale

“Once upon a time, cigarettes weren’t bad for you.” So begins These Things Ain’t Gonna Smoke Themselves: A Love/Hate/Love/Hate/Love Letter to a Very Bad Habit ($12.95, www.atomicbooks.com), Emily Flake’s hilarious and candid account of her tumultuous relationship with cigarettes—from that first sweet, satisfying drag to failed attempt after failed attempt to nix the habit. The critically acclaimed writer and illustrator’s brilliant little book is always honest and never preachy, and will have both addicts and their naysayers laughing (err, coughing) out loud. Whether you’ve been adevoted fan for decades or you just want to understand what drives seemingly intelligent folks to savor deadly cancer sticks, this 112-page gem is for you. (Jill Colvin)

Freak Show & Tell

As Coney Island enjoys its last hurrah before transforming into a glitzy Vegas-style resort, Archie McPhee has come out with the perfect line of keepsake toys to help you preserve the history of the great land of carny sleaze in your very own living room. TheLi’l Sideshow Frog Girl & Lobster Boy play set ($13.95, www.mcphee.com) features two half-human, half-animal creatures: he is plagued with red pincers and a tail, she with green webbed feet. Standing 2 1/2 inches tall, mini freak and freakette also come complete with a plastic stage and vinyl banner featuring an old-school sideshow illustration for added realism. And if you’re really feeling nostalgic, you can make your home circus complete withLi’l Sideshow Strong Man, Li’l Sideshow Bearded Lady andLi’l Sideshow World’s Tallest Man & World’s Smallest Man—of course, that last one’s all relative so theyreally only have each other to prove theirclaim to fame. (Jill Colvin)

A Stiff Upper Lip

Nothing is more inspiring than a man who devotes his life to a cause or ideal: men like Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. Now, another hero joins their ranks. But instead of equality or freedom, filmmaker Jay Della Valle works tirelessly to save the elusive mustache—that much-maligned mouth muff usually associated with pedophiles and porn stars. In his documentary, The Glorius Mustache Challenge ($14.99, gloriusmustache.com), Della Valle records the month-long journey experienced by a group of men under 30 as they each grow their very own flavor saver. The newly mustachioed guysruminate on both the benefits of the push broom and the challenges of growing a cookie duster. One disappointed lip cultivator bemoaned his nose neighbor: “The two girls in my life have both abandoned me, and they actually did say it was because of my mustache…Granted, I cheated on both of them.” Ah yes, life with a mustachio isn’t always fun and games. One musician with a’stache la Dalí warns, “If someone is really confident about their mustache, go into a truck-stop bathroom and hang out for about 20 minutes. Then see how confident you are about it, ’cause it can get prettyfucking creepy.” Not only does the oft-hilarioius film gather more soup strainers in one place than the average man sees in alifetime, it comes complete with free fake face fur and a whole hour of extra features, including Della Valle’s adventures on CNN, “The Today Show” and (of course) “Geraldo.” (Josh Saul)

Mayor Bloomberg had reopened the southern part of the 8.8-acre park after his inauguration in 2002, but it is the northern section that accounts for nearly a third of the space. Friends of City Hall Park, led by lower Manhattan activist Skip Blumberg, had been lobbying city officials to reopen it for years, and the time is finally nigh. In less than a week, New Yorkers will be able to enjoy the park’s chess tables, benches, lush green lawns and towering trees, a statue of New York Tribune founder Horace Greeley and—so you can quickly cut through all of that crap—a pedestrian walkway stretching from Broadway to Centre Street.

The city’s hospitals are running dry, as New York is currently experiencing its worst blood shortage in almost a decade. “It’s the most critical situation I’ve seen in the last 10 years—really touch and go,” says Dr. Carl. F. Wolf, director of the blood bank and transfusion services at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. The shortage even has some hospitals postponing elective surgeries. So this is a good time to make amends with you’re A-cups.

But not to worry, the New York Blood Center is making it easier to let the blood spill, thanks to a new technology that allows donors to give twice as much in a single sitting. Traditionally, donating a pint means giving up your plasma, platelets and white blood cells along with the good stuff—your red blood cells. The new technology, known as ALYX and developed by Baxter Technologies, spins the blood through a centrifuge, which separates the red cells and returns all the other liquids to the donor. The Blood Center says this leaves you feeling more hydrated and replenished. Basically, it’s like a trip to the spa!

The requirements for donors using ALYX are a little different, so call 1-800-933-BLOOD to find out how, when and where you can donate.

But today begins Summer Restaurant Week, and this year over 200 top eateries are participating, including Nobu, Café Boulud, Payard, Union Square Café and Grammercy Tavern, amongst others. When else can you get a three course pre-fixe lunch for a mere $24.07 and dinner for $35 in New York City? Drinks, taxes and tip not included. Basically, now through July 27 (excluding the weekend) is your one chance all year to eat at a 4-star restaurant on a 2-star wallet. So get out your loose-fitting pants with the elastic waistband and dig in.

Saturday, July 14 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., the 9th annual Broadway Barks benefit for New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies will take place in Shubert Alley. Stars like David Hyde Pierce, Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters (pictured), as well as Bruiser and Rufus from Legally Blonde, will all be and hand, not to mention over 150 cats and dogs. Besides the chance to adopt a cute and cuddly animal in need, they’ll be auctioning off celebrity autographed memorabilia and merchandise for those of you more into inanimate objects.

Host Mary Tyler Moore said, “For the first time in New York City’s history, the euthanasia rate for cats and dogs in the city’s Animal Care & Control shelters has fallen below 50 percent.” Co-host Bernadette Peters added,” It’s bringing us closer to the day when we don’t have to euthanize any healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs because of a lack of space.”

Broadway Barks, produced by Broadway Care/Equity Fights Aids, is sponsored by the ASPCA, The New York Times, Pedigree and RCA Small Wonder. Last year the event drew an audience of more than 6,000, but somehow we know there’ll still be enough pets to go around.

Imagine being evicted into this hot summer heat with nowhere to go. Now imagine doing it in a fur coat. It’s kitty season, and New York City’s animal shelters are overflowing with cats and dogs. While man’s best friend have made themselves virtually indispensable catching Frisbees and swimming alongside their masters during the warmer months, pets of the feline variety are being tossed out by the fistful. “City shelters are taking in 85 kittens and cats a day—up from about 50 a day just a few months ago,” said Richard Gentles, director of Administrative Services for the New York City Animal Care and Control (AC&C).

It’s getting so that shelters may have to euthanize the unwanted pets. "We have been making such good progress, this is heartbreaking," said Jane Hoffman, president of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, speaking of the dropping number of pets put to sleep of late. Let’s keep it that way, so make sure to chop off your male pets’ naughty bits and get pets of the female persuasion spayed. Even better, if you’re thinking of adopting, don’t let the sun set before you visit the AC&C (326 W. 110th, 212-788-4000), the ASPCA (424 E. 92nd, 212-876-7700) or any of the other animal shelters or rescue groups in New York City. Lucky for you, there’s never been a bigger selection—thanks to selfish owners looking to go on vacation.

Her performance included “Bemsha Swing,” a Thelonius Monk tune I first heard played by Monk himself at the Five Spot in 1963. In a previous set, he stood up in the middle and did a little dance. But not when I saw him. So I had asked him, “Hey Thelonius, what about your little dance?” and he stood up, turned toward me, smiled and did his little dance. Arriale left out the moves, but stirred my memory.

June, Jazz and Cognac at Hughes House continues this weekend. It’s hard to think of a more intimate venue than the parlor room of this landmark home with its original ceilings and moldings. This Friday night at 8 and 10, the Jana Herzen Band performs. Jana is the founder of Motema Music, whose offices are in Hughes House, and she’s also the executive producer of the JVC Festival. She describes her program of “Jazzified world-pop-folk” themed “ Love Happens” as her “original musical take on various angles of the love equation.” Saturday night’s performance (also at 8 and 10) is “Roni Ben-Hur: Strayhorn Project,” a tribute to the celebrated Billy Strayhorn. Complimentary Cognac Ferrand tastings and other drinks are served one half hour before all showtimes along with tasty vittles. And of course, the Hughes House, one time residence of the legendary Harlem Renaissance writer, would be worth seeing even without the great jazz.

Parks in better neighborhoods are, well, better. Shocking, we know. So a study by the Citizen’s Budget Committee (CBC) and New Yorkers for Parks (a park advocacy organization) came up with a plan to improve New York City’s Public Parks—“Recommendation: Bring all parks to an acceptable condition,” the report states. Brilliant!

Currently, the city gets just about all the money generated by its
parks; but the report suggests giving more of the profit to the
Department of Parks and Recreation, giving its managers greater
incentive to find ways for concessions to earn more. It’s called
enlightened self-interest. The CBC explains that parks in the best condition are the ones funded by private, non-profit groups, like the Central Parks Conservancy. And, it follows, parks in poorer neighborhoods are the ones in the worst condition, those run by the Parks Department. Duh.

One bright note, for the first time Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed budget preserves the last year’s funding level for park and tree maintenance as well as playground associates in parks where no staff is assigned. In the past, that funding has been negotiable with city council, but Bloomy has put his foot down this year as part of PlaNYC, allocating more money to care for the city’s trees and natural spaces. That totally makes up for not being able to sit around smoking on our trans fat-cushioned asses.

Mary Wilson looks great. It’s hard to believe she’s 63. But as she once told a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle who asked what her beauty secrets were, “Black don’t crack.” That may be the secret to her life. She’s certainly had a lot of provocations and difficult times. But she’s still as strong and vibrant as her voice.

Her solo show at Feinstein’s at the Regency, “Up Close,” runs through the end of the month and is aptly named: a small room with terrific acoustics, tables that aren’t piled on top of each other and comfortable, well-upholstered seating. Although it was clear her fans would have gladly stood up for the entire show. She opened with the ballad, “Here’s To Life” (“…To dreamers and their dreams”), she could have been singing about herself and her own personal resilience.

I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that the woman appears so confident and so happy to be right where she is. She even said so, “If I died and I could come back as anyone, I’d come back as Mary Wilson of The Supremes.” It’s impossible to look at her and listen to her and not be reminded of that young woman who, with her friends from the Brewster Projects of Detroit, dreamed of being a star and really made it, becoming one of The Supremes, one of the most successful and famous female singing groups in recording history. And when she sang, “My World Is Empty Without You,” it was hard to tell who was happier—the audience at hearing it or her while singing it. Her choice of songs was eclectic, “Smile,” “New York State of Mind” and “Don’t Know Why,” and her voice is amazingly strong, but what’s surprising is the emotional connection she brings to everything she sings.

Wilson thinks that the singers and groups today ought to realize that the eyes and ears of younger people are on them. “What you do matters to young people,” she cautions, adding they ought to try to “walk a straighter line.” Getting that first break may be harder, she acknowledges. “It’s more about marketing and making money than finding new genuine talent and creativity. Record companies are more into looking for a gimmick or something they can sell.”

Feinstein’s At The Regency ain’t cheap. There’s a $75 cover and a $40 minimum. But it’s certainly comparable to tickets to a Broadway show and a bite to eat. And all that for a living legend.

The Regency is at 540 Park Ave. (at 61st St.), 212-339-4095 for reservations.

June 23 is the first Saturday after the summer solstice, which means it’s that special time of year when mermaids, the rarest of creatures, can be seen in the thousands. That’s right, it’s the 25th anniversary of the annual Mermaid Parade at Coney Island, a celebration of sand, sea and questionable fish. In addition to hand-made mermaid and Neptune costumes, Coney Island’s own version of Mardi Gras boasts floats, various art, marching bands, antique cars and even a lighthouse, making it the nation’s largest art parade. It kicks off at 2 p.m. at West 10th Street and the Boardwalk, where King Neptune and Queen Mermaid will toss fruit into the ocean to appease the Sea Gods and mark the official opening of the ocean for the summer swimming season.

David Gratt, Managing Director of Coney Island USA, the not-for-profit arts organization that produces the parade, has announced that this year’s celebrity King Neptune will be Adam Savage of the Discovery Channel’s “MythBusters,” whose appearance will do double duty, “dispelling the myth that this is the Mermaid Parade’s last year,” and Queen Mermaid will be Patti D’Arbanville of FX’s “Rescue Me,” who’ll be there “to rescue Coney Island from Poorly Planned Development” (cute, huh?).

After the parade, stay for the ball, when everybody will gather to listen to music and watch sideshow acts and burlesque shows like the all-female “Tits and Giggles.” For a thrill of the non-marine variety, slip in to see Chuy, “the Wolf Man of Mexico,” living proof that fuzzy wuzzy wasn’t always a bear.

With the destruction of Astroland a done deal and all kinds of development looming, this Mermaid Parade may be the last to bear witness to Coney Island as it once was. So whether you have a thing for Ariel or Triton, take a break from your fellow bipeds and get your sea legs—who knows, one of these days the Mermaid Parade could be taking place under water.
