one of the upper west side's most well known, architecturally significant buildings, the ansonia, does not even exist, according to the census bureau.

on april 1, ny1 reported that residents of the 17-story, approximately 450,000-square-foot building, at 2109 broadway between west 73rd and 74th streets, never received a census form because of a mailing error.

lester farthing, regional director of the u.s census bureau, said that the landmark building is not part of the census' geographical database. officials are investigating the glitch, according to an april 7 letter. council member gale brewer first alerted the bureau about the oversight.

another building, 250 w. 94th st., on the corner of broadway, was also left out of the geographical database. due to a probable mailing error, three additional buildings never received census forms, including two-307 w. 79th st. and 330 w. 95th st.-that are single room occupancy (sro) buildings.

marc lippman, the ansonia's general manager, said the building recently received a stack of census forms and staff put one in each apartment.

brewer wants the bureau to extend the april 15 return deadline before workers start going door-to-door to follow up on missing information. large swaths of the neighborhood still have lackluster returns; only four west side census tracts beat the national return average of 66 percent. the highest rate of returns, 68 percent, was counted in the area bounded by west 94th and 97th streets between central park and amsterdam avenue; and west 90th and 94th streets between central park and amsterdam avenue. residents living in the area from riverside drive to amsterdam avenue between west 106th and 110th streets had a 67 percent rate of return, as did residents living between west 102nd and 106th streets from riverside drive to amsterdam avenue.
