A White Woman Explains Why She Prefers Black Men

Black skin is thick and lush, sensuous to the touch, like satin and velvet made flesh. There’s only one patch of skin on a white man’s body that remotely compares to nearly every inch of a black man’s skin. The first time I caressed black skin, it felt like a luxury I shouldn’t be able to afford. I craved it more strongly than Carrie Bradshaw craved Manolo Blahnik shoes. That phrase, “Once you go black, you never go back” is all about the feeling of the skin.

And I had the socially acceptable explanation for my craving. I used that paucity-of-available-white-partners rationale to explain my relationships with black men for several years. A white woman past forty is often passed over by her white-male contemporaries. She goes younger or ethnic or foreign-born or down the socioeconomic scale or darker or she spends lonely nights at home with her cats. Black men are happy to get the babe they couldn’t have when she was twentysomething and fertile. The laws of the marketplace do prevail. It’s not me, it’s them being the white guys who weren’t after me anymore, or so I claimed.

That’s a lie. The truth is, I attract about the same percentage of available white men my age (and far younger!) now as I did when I was thirty and that’s not including the unavailable white men who want to play around anyway.

Enough white men want me that I was hardly facing enforced celibacy, but I don’t want them.

I want black men. They want me. We look at one another and exchange a visible frisson of sexual energy in the lingering glances. And our attraction is based first on race. We are not those couples who “happen to fall in love” with someone of a different race or more purposefully come together but out of some greater sense of interracial understanding and respect. Not as politically-correct men and women do we seek one another out. The Internet has made it a lot easier for us to find each other now. Men advertise: ebony seeks ivory. Women write: seeking tall, dark, and handsome. Very dark. We are not the same people who say: Race is not important. It is important to us. We have race-specific desires.

Even in a time when nearly 40 percent of single Americans have dated outside their race, that deliberate seeking of the specific other makes some people, especially black women, damned mad.

We are what they denigrate and castigate: white women and black men who choose one another because of our racial differences. They resent our taking their men. Black men are two and a half times more likely to marry a white woman than a black woman is to marry a white man. Black women can point to that statistic in justifying their wrath. But in truth, black sisters, we’re after the sex, not the ringand these guys aren’t the marrying kind anyway.

Yes, the sex!

The woman who goes after black men is a variant of sex journalist Susie Bright’s “white bitch in heat,” a woman who puts sex first even though women aren’t supposed to do that. According to one school of thought, white women turn to black men when their sex drives kick into higher gear and their social inhibitions recede into the rearview mirror. It’s a “yes, baby, now I’m ready for you” reaction.

When we get to the “yes, baby” place, they know it, and they are ready and waiting for us. Black men have more energy, style and edge than white men. They know how to flirt, a nearly lost art among the rest of us. A black man is so damned sexy because he knows how to make a woman feel sexy.

Black men have something white guys don’t have anymore: confidence in their masculinity, their sexuality. They clearly know they’re men. White men appear to be waiting for the latest sociological research study to let them know if they are men or not. Yet black men are gentlemen, something else white men no longer are. They make me feel like a woman, both respected and desired. I can let go of my inhibitions, my need to control, when I am with them. How many white men can treat a woman like a lady and ravish her too?

I often felt in my White Period that only during heated sex does that little layer of air bubbles between me and the world pop and disappear, leaving me open to intimate connection. It takes a lot of friction for two white people to get that close. These black men, so alive with erotic electricity, cut through the bubbles with a touch, a caress, a kiss and the freedom means I can truly touch them. I am like a pampered passenger in a Porsche with an expert driver at the wheel. I know I could suggest a route change, but I never really want to do that. On the other hand, the last time I had sex with a white man, we slogged along a bumpy road in a really old VW, the driver like the typical bumbling tv husband who would neither ask for nor accept the directions he badly needed.

My current lover, a handsome businessman, seduced me via eye contact at a neighborhood bar while I was eating burgers with a friend. Without saying a word, he paid the compliments, asked the questions with his expressive eyes. He didn’t move over to sit beside me and ask if he could buy me a drink until he knew the time was right. Both soft-spoken and assertive, he has impeccable manners and charm. I was kissing him in a cab 30 minutes after that drink.

On another night in that same bar, a different black man, an artist, knelt and kissed my knees.

I am sure there must be some black men who aren’t good in bed. Personally, I have not experienced one who isn’t. (True, I am not dating down the socioeconomic ladder, but I didn’t do that when I dated white either, so the racial comparisons seem valid and fair.) They look better than white men, they touch and kiss and make love better than white men. Statistically, their penises are only a fraction of an inch bigger on average, but they seem bigger and harder.

White men over 40 have lost their waistlines and their zest for life if they ever had it. They carry resentments, grudges and extra pounds in their basketball bellies. Perhaps a good part of that bloat is unhappiness. Even the thin ones look flabby somehow and deeply aggrieved. They nurse the smallest perceived slight longer than their double shots of Scotch. Surely our culture as much as biology turns them into softer, spongier, less-interesting versions of their youthful selves just at the point where women and black men and other minorities are emerging strong. Society overvalues the white man, leaving him angry and bitter when he realizes, around age 40, that he’s not all that.

With the exception of some Italians, white men don’t turn me on anymore.

That admission puts me in the same category as the older man only interested primarily or exclusively in young women. While women my age scowl and frown at these aging, Upper West Side Boomers pushing strollers as the hand of the thin, blonde wife 20 years their junior rests lightly on their arm, I feel a kinship with the old goats. We are the same, me and that bald white guy, drawn to the exotic other, not caring that the object of our desire has no childhood memory of a Kennedy assassination or a typical WASP Sunday dinner of over-roasted beef, lumpy mashed potatoes and soggy vegetables.

Analyze the roots of attractions all you want like scientists have done and you won’t come up with a perfect explanation for why we crave what we do. Desire rises from our depths and is gloriously oblivious to the good opinion of others. Yet until recently, I pretended that my lust was an equal-opportunity craving, because that seemed like the right thing to do.

Halfway through the first glass of wine in my last date with a white man, I realized that little clouds of sadness and self-pity were regularly fluffing off his psyche like the dust clouds kicked up by that dirt-smudged “Peanuts” character as he walks through Charlie Brown’s life. This guy was at least mildly depressed, and I wanted to tell him to exercise, lose weight, trim the combover and get interested in something outside yourself. I would have walked out on him immediately, but he seemed to expect that. I couldn’t deliver the blow to his ego proffered like the naked neck of a martyr to the ax. My Southern cousins would describe his general demeanor as a “hangdog air.” Into the second glass of wine and glancing longingly at the exit, I wanted to hang that dog myself when he mentioned that his face was flushed, I hadn’t noticed, because he’d taken a Viagra “just in case.”

What did he think would entice me more: That he assumed sex was probable because I’m a sex journalist or that he would need chemical help if sex did occur?

I cannot even imagine a black man bungling an attempted seduction in such a sad way.

That was my last token white guy. I recently came out of my racial-preference closet and told my friends, “I love black men. I’m not attracted to white men over 40, and I’m not dating them anymore. Really, it’s not them, it’s me.

Nobody was surprised.

        believe that any woman at all, namely a white woman, would want this inferior form

        In a few short paragraphs, the pendulum of black male prowess has swung from one
        extreme to the other- from a wild sexy animal in bed who can swoon white  women
        to an inadequate and inferior form of man who is outsmarted and forced out of the 
        white collar world by black women. 

        In either case, it needs to be noted that this “man” is being used by females in a
        fashion that compromises the traditional notion of masculinity.

        The white author of the original article reduces the black man to a play thing, a
        black and sensuous sexualized “thing”  like a prized (Pet) horse in heat that is great to “Stud”- use sexually.
        The black man, laments his inability to get ahead because black women wont let him.
        If they do, he contends, the white woman will take him away from the black woman.
        Both blacks and whites have painted a picture in which black men, unlike white men,
        cannot think for themselves because their sole identifying factor to signify they are
        men at all is not a masculine ability to overcome adversity of any kind (adversity is both overcome -and created- by white men) but an unsatialbe sexual appettite that
        is there for the taking by anyone who wants it.
        They are always “in heat”, so to speak.
        As a European man, I find the concept unappealing because there is something inherantly animalistic about the concept of oversexualization. It lacks integrity,
        denying the true reality of sex in which intimate communion between a man and
        a woman is brought to its indescribable zenith when two people love each other.
        What we have here, instead, sounds more like a well narrated PBS special on
        the sexual habits of the bonobo monkey rather than the interaction between human
        beings and, unbeknown to the woman who began it all, it is not only unflattering
        to the concept of black “masculinity”, but sadly for blacks, provides further evidence
        that blacks have very little to offer society at large save for their LARGE sexual
        appetites.
        It takes intelligence to build airplanes and MRI machines.
        It takes courage to form armies over the millenia and protect ones homeland.
        It takes vision to build cities with skyscrapers
        and love to raise honest children who believe in hardwork and civility to
        populate those cities.
        To some degree, we whites have done that.
        And if the measure of masculinity has been reduced to ones “sex drive” the
        most masculine guy I know is my nieces rabbit, Floppy.
        And, incidentallu,
        Floppy is covered by white fur.

            White males are the primary reason for so many advancements in economy, medicine, and human life. Of course, they did this through hostility and slavery. But their contribution outweighs their sins. Check he list of noble prize winners and other contributors of medicine/Science. White males are predominant – Asians and Blacks(least) are just upholding/enhancing.

            I am not saying we should give more respect to while males, all I expect is equal opportunity – no racial quota or affirmative actions – to every body.

But I met this black man who I fell head over heels in love with him and him with me…His wife was black, she was really routy and ghetto, he gave her everything uner the stars, she never worked a day in her life, he treated her like a princess, when he got laid off his job she cheated on him and kicked him when he was down.         I find it strange that no one on this site mentions the fact that the first slaves in this country were not black, but white. The first blacks came here here as indentured servants like everyone else did. The Moors ruled Spain for 800 years and many of the Captains were black who drove the slave ships, and traveled with the explorers. And if you did not know it, we all have African ancestry.The DNA will prove what I say…So sad, many of those who call themselves white, will never be able to speak of their roots in slavery..too bad..Why do not you look up white slaves, white masters.           It is true that we all have African ancestry, but when it comes to the Moors it is you who are in need of education. First of all, there really were no disinct people called “the Moors”; this was simply an umbrella term the Europeans applied to all Muslims from North Africa, the vast majority of whom were not black Africans but Arabs and Berbers. The term is loosely derived from the Latin word for foreignor, “moros”. The people caled “the Moors” looked very similar to southern Europeans to begin with (full blooded North Africans look more or less like Italians and Greeks, i.e. olive skinnned/tan white people).

        Children need guidance to survive. If you were born into slavery and you weren’t allowed to learn anything except how to serve or do a remedial task then what would you do? Where would you go? Blacks did not love slavery. That is a racist lie. I know 1st hand that blacks hated it. They simply had no better options being in a strange land millions of miles away from everything they knew. Their history and lineage was lost. They had no hope as soon as they were placed on the boat and you show yourself to lack any human decency or empathy in trying to justify a human atrocity. Nothing you say means anything as long as you try to justify it.         FBoykin went to work as an inventor. He received his first patent
        in 1959 for a wire resistor that allowed a precise amount of electricity to
        flow to a component. Two year later, he created an even better resistor that

        and shock. A low-cost product that was more reliable, the invention brought
        Otis Boykin to the forefront of American electronics.

        Consumer electronics manufacturers, the United States military and

        devices to this very day. But, perhaps most importantly, a version of his

Over the recent years, I’ve asked various sexual partners about the difference between white, black, and Asian when they have had such experiences and it truly varies upon the individual himself. I’ve contended with both Caucasian and Africans for women, and mostly win because of the confidence I have. The sheer arrogance and egotism, you simply need to put out the aura or feeling that you know you’re better than others… even if you’re not.     I am a young white woman. I have been more attracted to black men since I was a child. It was never to do with exoticism, or with being racist, I never saw myself better than a black woman.     As a matter of factual reality, the largest dating site in America has insinuated that White Women as a group are the most racist group, because they are the least likely of any ethnic/gender category to list an openess to date non-white males. 

    As much as this article plays on racial/sexual stereotyping, it is stood on its head by the facts.  Most white women are looking for only men of their race.  This is at a higher rate than asians/blacks of either gender, and the rate at which white males are open to interracial relationships.

        Why are you so focused on a person’s skin color? There are men who are gentlemen and men who act like pigs of all skin color. Just as there are some white guys who are rats, the truth is there are black guys, Asian guys, Middle Eastern guys, Indian guys, Native American guys (etc) can be the same as well.     Isn’t a large part of the attraction of white women to dark men self induced? Isn’t it a difference in upbringing? White men, at least the previous generations were reared o be considerate and respectful. As a white male I was told that women weren’t playthings and to consider their desires and feelings. As an adult I have realized that some women WANT to be considered and used as playthings. Many black men are aggressive and inconsiderate due to poor parenting. As a result of this same lack of upbringing they have fewer psychological inhibitions. It is bordering upon, if not fully qualified as a fetish. There are a variety of websites dedicated to this very purpose. Older women who find themselves less desirable in their latter years, find renewed energy from the attentions of black men because they FEEL attractive due to the attention they receive and make themselves believe that they still have “it”. The reality is that these black men simply have lower standards and as a result of human nature will gladly allow someone to support them. There are obviously exceptions to this rule but nearly everyone of my male black friends would have sex with virtually any woman that is willing. My white friends on the other hand are very selective, which is why most of them are only interested in much younger women.

    arguable and noticeably true that there is something about black men and
    their culture and inherited “taste’. However there are faults in black
    men just as there are faults in white men and the same goes for the good
    features of both. That being said, I still believe that you are being
    too stereotypical in judging what black and white men are and are
    not…it sounds to me that you must have had many bad experiences with
    white men for you to be draw these stereotypical conclusions to
    distinguish white and black traits. Myself, being an extensive traveler
    by profession, an option that I strongly suggest to you to take is to

    Sounds like this woman is (or was – it was written 7 years ago) having a major midlife crisis. Her views are pretty typical of a particular strain of what I would call “erotic racism”. You may not agree with what she said, her context, or reasons for her attraction to black me but its her account of why she does what she does or feels what she feels.     I’m white and used to live in an area that was predominently black and a lot of the clubs I attended had mostly black people in them. As a person in my early twenties it didn’t take me long to pick up the dating habits of my black counter parts. Black people are confident and by being around them I found that I had become highly confident too and it was at this point that I started to have a lot of success with dating. In these clubs I was no longer a sheepish white minority trying to fit in, I was a confident English white man that stood out. I dressed in expensive suits and had assertive body language.

    When speaking to my white friends they asked me why I was so confident around women. I didn’t realise I was until I saw how hopeless they were with dating. If you are assertive and charming you will be able to date women of all races, even the white women who say they do not like white men. As for having soft velvet skin, black people have a seceret weapon, it’s called cocoa butter. Use it, it works just as good on white people, since using it women always compliment on how good my skin feels.

    Black people are naturally leaner and bigger built, hit the gym and you will even out this advantage.     She doesn’t comment on their personalities but only says they were ‘gentlemen.’ Seriously though she doesn’t seem to have had any emotional connection in her so- called ‘relationships.’ Someone should really tell her relationships aren’t just built on sex, but on LOVE and RESPECT.
    I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with having many lovers but frankly this woman gives herself off as a slut.
