A Little Bit Softer Now...

Last month we quietly filled you on the [city’s new noise code], which officially took effect this past Sunday. Grumpy New Yorkers amassed [2,183 noise complaints](http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2007/07/03/2007-07-03_nyers_making_a_ruckus_to_get_a_little_qu.html) to [311](http://www.nyc.gov/html/doitt/html/about/about_311.shtml), mostly about ice cream trucks, loud dogs and air conditioners. “Nobody wants to destroy nightlife in this city,” Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday. “On the other hand, people have a right to sleep and it’s finding that balance—we will do that.” Noise-related calls to the city’s hot line are the [top grievance](http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070623/ap_on_re_us/new_york_noise_2), increasing steadily over the past few years: There were 38,660 of them in 2005, and 41,856 in 2006. But the number of complaints logged on July 1—D-Day for the new code—is actually lower than the previous two Sundays, which logged 2,198 and 2,328 noise complaints respectively. We wonder how many of those were about air conditioners. Seriously, air conditioners?
